Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is an essential additive for every diesel powered vehicle made after 2010. The EPA standards changed in 2010 when they lowered the acceptable amount of Nitrogen Oxides allowed to be emitted from a vehicle. To meet these standards the auto industry adopted DEF as the solution.
DEF is a specific mixture of 32.5% urea and 67.5% Deionized water. The solution is held in a separate storage tank and injected as a fine mist into the hot exhaust gasses. The heat breaks the urea down into ammonia—the actual NOx-reducing agent. Through a catalytic converter, the ammonia breaks the NOx down to harmless nitrogen (N) gas and water vapor. The result is a clean emission.
With the complex system working effectively, it can cause issues if the DEF is not supplied properly. Running out of DEF will change the air mixture the vehicle is tuned to receiving, causing potential issues in performance and warranty. It will also potentially clog the exhaust system resulting in which could cause the powertrain module to force the truck into Limp mode or cause catastrophic damage to the vehicle. Even driving with the DEF supply low can cause issues.
The Snohomish Co-op has DEF for our customers in many forms for our customers so they never run low on DEF. We have the it in the store in the standard jugs:
1 Gallon
2.5 Gallon
Brand New to the Co-op is our Bulk DEF Dispenser available 24/7 at our diesel pumps! Larger commercial vehicles can access the volume they need without using multiple cans for every fill up. The DEF is able to be used by all customers and you can simply pay at the pump just as normal.
Stop by the Snohomish Co-op location for all your DEF needs, anytime you need it!
